Greetings, Cousins.

As a fledgling member of this Order, I had the interesting experience of having someone who, upon hearing that I had been placed on vigil, ask was what it is, really, that I do, and why was I being offered the Accolade?

Beyond the first vaguely nonplussed thought that came to mind of 'well... um... for service?...', it struck me as a fair question, and one for which I didn't have a quick or simple answer. I've continued to mull that question over, and it seems it isn't a simple question at all, but has a number of parts.

What really is the nature of Service? Some people seem to think that to be recognized, that there must be some specific large act of service to which we can point. Others think instead of a body of service, with a list of results. What denotes one person's service as different from that of another? Good questions to ponder, even if they don't immediately have clear answers.

What really identifies a Peer? Within the context of the chivalric virtues, we at have a framework for discussion. For many discussions, really.

It also brings to mind that for many of us, service is not something we practice with the objective of being noticed, or to be the focus of atte ntion. It's something we do, whether quietly in plain sight or behind the scenes, in ways that are largely unnoticed or even invisible. For many things, that' s as it should be. But it should be a reminder to us that sometimes those serving well may serve unseen, and that we should always be watching for those who serve outside the limelight.

With all of that, there's still the simple, direct question. So for the curious, here's a brief Vitae...
